A platform
game
The goal of the CG course was to set a fairy tale ten years after the happy ending and build a platform game - accompanied by 3D images supporting the narrative - whose characters are Lego men. We made a horror re- imagining with clear references to Tim Burton. Ten years later Hansel and Gretel quarrel, breaking the magic locket they stole from the witch: the breakup awakens the dead witch, who imprisons Hansel in the locket. The only way Gretel can get her brother back is to return to the witch's house, now made of rotten sweets, and win her for good.

Hansel & Gretel
game

03             TYPE: UNIVERSITY TEAM PROJECT      COURSE: LABORATORIO DI COMPUTER GRAFICA      SKILLS: ART DIRECTION, 3D ART, 3D RENDER      PLAY THE GAME: THE CURSED MEDALLION

Challenge
The main goal was to create a two-level platform game: to do so, it was necessary to know the game design and strategies used by this discipline. Each level had to be studied in detail, from difficulty to facilitation, from length to surprise effect. Starting with the main characters, who in the case of this game would become legos, the narrative had to have an antecedent, an evolution, and at least two conclusions, depending on the player's skill.
Solution
Hansel and Gretel, now teenagers, quarrel and in this way the magic medallion, stolen from the witch, breaks. Hansel is trapped inside the medallion. So Gretel has no choice: she has to go and retrieve her brother and to do so she has to get to the witch's house and fight her. That' s why two levels have been created: the first level - which develops horizontally - consists of the forest that Gretel has to go through to get to the witch's house; the second level - which develops vertically - consists of the witch's house. The idea was to create a horror setting, there have been some cornerstones: gloomy and dark colours, a disturbing atmosphere and rotten sweets. This led to the creation of two separate settings: the forest and the interior of the witch's house. The first one was created thanks to Vray's Fog environment which made it possible to make the feeling of bewilderment. The interior, on the other hand, was created by specially modelling the furnishings of the house and using textures to highlight the rottenness. Per quanto riguarda I personaggi, there are three characters in the game: Gretel, Hansel and the Witch. For each character, both the “original” version and the evolution of the sequel of the fairytale have been created: for this reason to each of them has been assigned a colour to identify it. The lego features in the characters are recognizable, but even more highlighted is the reference to Tim Burton: big eyes, slender and thin bodies and hollowed-out faces.
